Our 2021 conference was held at Newcastle University on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th July 2021. Our proposal was to hold this in April 2020, but that was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of ongoing COVID complications, this was our first fully hybrid conference – with contributions from speakers in Newcastle and via Zoom.

We were delighted to return to the North East, where we were hosted and funded by the School of History at Newcastle University, with the support of Dr Martin Farr.

Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay, who served as Political Secretary to the Prime Minister (2016-19) and is the Director of the Conservative History Group, delivered a keynote talk entitled “The North East in the Shadow of Mrs Thatcher”.

We also held a roundtable discussion on the subject ‘Is the current government Thatcherite?’.

Our thanks to all those who attended and participated after what was a very challenging year.

Registration and Programme

The conference handbook (below) contains the full programme and speakers’ abstracts.

The Thatcher Network is a not-for-profit organisation and any funds raised went towards the cost of the conference.
